Fun Factoids

“13” FACTOIDS

  1. Teens by teens: Who better to portray teen angst then teens themselves!
  2. Cast from all over lower mainland: Our teen cast members are from Port Moody, Delta, North Vancouver, White Rock, Burnaby, Surrey, Richmond and Vancouver!!
  3. Youngest cast at the fringe: 26 youths aged from 12 to 17!
  4. Double cast: The slightly older and for the most part more experienced Senior cast mentors the younger Junior cast. They learn from each other and youth performance opportunities increase.
  5. Vancouver premiere (almost Canadian): First time in Vancouver and just beat out from being the first time in Canada by a summer theatre camp performance in Toronto at the end of August and three performances by a Victoria private school the first week of September. Darn it!
  6. Brand new Production Company with a Twist: Awkward Stage Productions Society was created to provide real life performance and production opportunities to youth in that awkward stage of transitioning to professional theatre. Helmed by experienced theatre education professionals, ASP’s goal is to provide development in all aspects of theatre production, with unique double cast.
  7. All youth productions: Not just the players are youths, but the band and technical crew are as well!
  8. The Firehall Theatre: A new addition to The Fringe venues this year. The Fringe continues to grow!
  9. Jason Robert Brown: Hailed as “one of Broadway’s smartest and most sophisticated songwriters since Stephen Sondheim” (Philadelphia Inquirer), Jason is the composer and lyricist of the musical, “The Last Five Years,” which won Drama Desk Awards for Best Music and Best Lyrics and won a 1999 Tony Award for his score to “Parade“, a musical written with Alfred Uhry.
  10. “13” on Broadway: Opened on at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on September 16, 2008 in previews, with an official opening on October 5, 2008 and closed on January 4, 2009.
  11. 13 Players: There are 13 roles in “13”!
  12. 13 Again: Among some Jews, a man who has reached the age of 83 will celebrate a 2nd bar mitzvah, under the logic that a “normal” lifespan is 70 years, so that an 83-year-old can be considered 13 in a second lifetime.
  13. Unlucky 13: Apollo 13 was the only unsuccessful mission by the U.S. to land humans on the moon and 13 is the traditional number of steps to the gallows! BUT IT’S A GREAT MUSICAL!!!
